Forever Art

When I was seventeen, I took a trip across Tennessee to Memphis; along the way I noticed that suddenly there was an abundance of litter. It was like someone who worked for the garbage company said, “fuck it” and just started throwing all the trash back out of their truck. Trash was in the ditch and road, the remanence showing you exactly where previous tires had touched. The mass amount of refuse had flown up into the trees and bushes, so not only is it on the ground but as a traveler you become encased in it as you continue. How could a place that is so beautiful be needlessly destroyed by those who inhabit it?

 

Reflection and change are characteristics of a healthy system which has been absent within society since the industrial revolution. They have been replaced by indifference and repetition leading to the production of items like single use plastics. I make figure-based sculptures and architectural installations about human waste and relationships. Utilizing repetition, light, polystyrene and polyethylene plastics along with metal casting I create pieces as a societal critique. I have enlisted these materials to participate in the conversation regarding the errors of the world we live in today. A world that caters to the conveniences of the masses and forgets the past and future generations.
